Nicole is the first person to be nominated two years in a row to be a hidden hero. She was nominated because she raises awareness and helps those in need throughout the community. Nicole was born and raised in Stevens Point, she has lived here for 33 years.
We asked Nicole where did it all start, she says "I think it started back in my youth. I was in 4H and we were always doing stuff to help the community and I looked forward to it all the time. Now working for Sentry Insurance, they encourage my passion of giving back." She has chaired multiple fundraisers for organizations in the Portage County area. A few times a year, she runs fundraisers on her Facebook page "Fabulousness". Having 2,500 members and counting, Fabulousness is a positive place where people in the community are able to go and enjoy her positive post and funny jokes daily.
About 6 years ago, she started doing couple $5 fundraisers on her personal Facebook page a year. In January of 2020 she decided to make an official page, just in the hopes of getting a few more people involved and maybe do six (6) or seven (7) fundraisers yearly. In a year's time they have donated over $25,000, sponsored nine (9) families for Christmas, did a toiletries drive, non-perishable drive and helped a mother and her two (2) kids start over. The group continues to grow and is able to help more and more people.
What did you overcome to be here now?
I don't like public attention or the spotlight. I like doing everything behind the scenes and coordinating the fundraisers. It's been a big Step for me to get used to getting the attention. But I'm OK with it now, as it's getting more awareness out about the group and our mission. And that's a big part of this mission.
Nicole's Favorite's:
Food- Peters Beef Steaks
Book- Any biography about the Kennedy's
Quote- "Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world"
What makes you happy?
Watching my family and friends become happy and successful. Oh and her 3 dogs. Her favorite thing to do is meet cancer patients in Portage County and gift them with things such as lotions, blankets, gift cards, etc. What our community can learn from her is simple. She believes in reaching out to people and asking how they are, because she doesn't like to assume that those in her life are always okay.
How does living in Portage County influence you?
Having lived here my whole life, I have seen first hand how this community backs it's members and helps those in need. Working at Sentry insurance has also had a big influence on me. Their dedication to the community aligns so much with my personal goals and The Power of $5 goals. They have been a huge influence in my continued efforts in the Power of $5.
Who's your hero?
My grandmother raised five (5) kids, all while helping my grandpa farm/milk cows. She is the most wonderful woman in the world and if I can even be 1/4 of the woman she is, I will be happy.
What can people from the community learn from you?
You don't have to give or have a lot of money to make a difference. This group has shown that with just $5, together it can and does make a difference.
What is your most deeply held belief?
If you can give, do it. You will never regret it.
Do you prefer to donate time or money to those in need?
Time. Both are needed to successfully help, but you can't put a price on the time.
What is the hardest truth you've ever learned?
Life is too short.
