Dawn Cherek was nominated as a hidden hero due to her important role as the Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Wisconsin. Dawn is the cornerstone of this organization, which provides children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
Dawn grew up in Elderon, Wisconsin. She has lived in Portage County for around 25 years now. 22 of those years she has been working for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Her involvement started when she was 18 and attending the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. She became a big sister to a young 8-year-old girl named Samantha and their relationship lasted up until Samantha graduated. They had a 10 year relationship and they still keep in touch via social media.
Dawn's passion sparked from her volunteer work with Big Brothers Big Sisters while attending college. Her degree was in Sociology and Social work and she decided to take on an internship at the organization on top of her volunteer work. She was an intern for 2 semesters and then was hired on part-time as a Case Worker in her second semester as an intern. This role later became Case Manager and after 9 years of working within the organization she became the Program Director. Now, for the past five years she has been the Executive Director of the entire organization.
The biggest challenge Dawn has worked through while being employed with Big Brothers Big Sisters is simply seeing some of the struggles and environments these kids go through and live in. Knowing that she and other volunteers could not change what was happening in that aspect was difficult. However, she knew that she was providing a safe space for the children to flourish and giving them resources that were needed. She knew that was all she could do and truly what they needed. She has learned from her time in social work that absolutely everyone deserves and needs a chance to grow.
Outside of work, Dawn has 2 children of her own. An 18-year-old son who is also attending the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point here in Portage County as well as a 15-year-old daughter.
